We all know that filmmaking can be an expensive business, so it would make sense that studios would try to cut costs wherever they can. Some of these attempts can go unnoticed but others can be picked up by fans almost immediately, which is exactly what happened with the upcoming film, Life.
Eagle-Eyed Reddit user toomuchsoull noticed something interesting in the recent TV spot for the upcoming Jake Gyllenhal/Ryan Reynolds film. At the 25 second mark a crowd of people can be seen looking up at the sky, which normally wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, but it appears this particular shot has been seen before way back in 2007’s Spider-Man 3.
Here’s the shot from the Life TV Spot.
And here’s the same shot, with added man with a mustache, from Spider-Man 3:
It’s obviously been edited to look slightly different, but it’s obvious that this is the exact same scene. It’s actually pretty incredible that someone actually caught this duplicated scene, especially since it was from nearly ten years ago and given that Spider-Man 3 wasn’t exactly a fan-favorite.
Obviously Columbia Pictures didn’t count on the Reddit users love of crowd scenes. You can check out the TV spot below:
This isn’t the first time fans have caught a studio recycling footage, fans noticed that explosion connoisseur, Michael Bay, used footage from his 2005 film The Island in his 2011 film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Another example of this would be how Steven Spielberg used footage of a plane flying over the Himalayas from Lost Horizon in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
You can check out the crowd from Spider-Man 3 on the big screen when Life hits theatres March 18th.
