Well it seems as if nothing is sacred in Hollywood nowadays. With reboots, franchises and unwarranted sequels being made left, right and center it now appears as if Gladiator may be the next in line for a potential sequel. Released back in 2000, Gladiator was a huge success, raking in $457.6 million at the box office and earning a plethora of awards including Best Picture and Best Actor at the Academy Awards.
The movies mainstream success lead to a rekindling interest in films centered around Roman and Greek culture however recent years have seen them fall out of favour. There was a time in which a proposed prequel was talked about however this then lead to a change of direction when Nick Cave was brought onto writing duties for a potential sequel. This idea however was ultimately abandoned over a decade ago for being too far fetched to the relief of many fans.
Well now Ridley Scott is at it again. After having a resurgence as of late, thanks to Prometheus and The Martian both performing well with critics and moviegoers, it now looks as if he’s interested in bringing Maximus back for another epic.
Now if you don’t know by now, then shame on you but we all know that Maximus died at the end of Gladiator although that hasn’t stopped Ridley from coming up with a way to bring him back.
“I know how to bring him back. I was having this talk with the studio — ‘but he’s dead.’ But there is a way of bringing him back. Whether it will happen I don’t know. Gladiator was 2000, so Russell’s changed a little bit. He’s doing something right now but I’m trying to get him back down here.”
It’ll be interesting to see how Ridley plans on resurrecting the character and whether or not his idea for a sequel would be as ludicrous as Nick Caves concept. However as we all know, nothing is ever concrete when it comes to Hollywood. With Ridley Scott returning to the Alien franchise, who knows what may happen! Alien: Covenant scheduled for release on May 18th, 2017 and then Ridley’s next project will be adapting the novel Wraiths of the Broken Land to the big screen.
