In brand new news, that’s not really news, but is still kinda news. Avatar 2 has been delayed, and is reportedly not going to meet its 2018 release date.
In a recent interview James Cameron stated that:
“Well, 2018 is not happening, we haven’t announced a firm release date. What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking.”
The only question I want to bring up in all of this, do people really want an Avatar sequel? The first was such a huge hit, and whether you’re a fan of the film or not, it works perfectly well as a standalone story. If an uninspired standalone story.
I can’t help but feel that Avatar, though impressive, is such a product of its time, and was only really a success due to 3D being a relatively new venture for mainstream film at the time. Now that 3D is very run of the mill these days, is there anything Avatar has left to offer in one film, never mind the apparent four they’re planning to film back to back.
Ah well, maybe the four Avatar sequels will come along and amaze us all, there’s a chance. But when it’s taken this long to continue such a simple story, is it really worth continuing?
