A few days ago, Joseph Kosinski, director of Tron: Legacy, revealed what he was originally going to do with a third Tron movie had it ever seen the light of day. However, just recently, Disney broke silence on the issue of the franchise saying that a new film is in the works. However, this film isn’t going to be a direct sequel to Legacy. Instead, it’s intended to be a reboot of sorts. The reboot in question will be using unused plot elements that were originally intended for Tron 3 and will feature a new character prominent to the story by the name of Ares. And who is in talks to play this character? Well none other than Oscar-winner and recent Razzie nominee for his oh so fascinating performance in Suicide Squad, Jared Leto.
If this project becomes a reality, not only would Leto star in the film, but he will also produce it along with Emma Ludbrook and Tron: Legacy co-producer Justin Springer.
Many people are tilting their heads at the idea of rebooting a film franchise that hasn’t been very successful at the box office and starring a leading actor who is polarizing to say the least with critics and audiences alike. This may seem like a brain dead move on Disney’s part, but this is the same company who decided to do a shot-by-shot remake of one of their most successful animated films of all time and cast a lead actress without figuring out if she could sing first leading to obvious auto-tune being used on her voice. In this author’s not so humble opinion, intelligence has not been Disney’s strong suit in live action films as of late.
Earlier this month, the second film’s director gave an update on the film:
“The movie was called, “TRON: Ascension”, I think that’s out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. .. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a ‘Stranger in a Strange Land,’ trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.”
