An Eastern Kentucky police department received backlash over their choice of symbol for the boys in blue, and even with a guy like Frank Castle, his image alone can show as much terror as the bullets he uses.
The Catlettsburg Police Department added the iconic Punisher skull to help promote its Blue Lives Matter slogan to the hoods of 8 of their Ford Interceptor police sedans. Apparently it was inspired by the film American Sniper, which had multiple references to the insignia. Little did they know that the skull of the Punisher stemmed more than what they thought in the fil
While the design was approved by the municipal government in the first place, some residents did come quickly to call and express their concerns through a multitude of phone calls, leaving a bad impression on the community.
Police Chief Cameron Logan stated the following:
“We’re getting so many calls, and they’re saying that the Punisher logo [means] we’re out to kill people, and that’s not the meaning behind that. That didn’t cross my mind. That design is basically to give back to the police officers. Our lives matter just as much as anybody’s. … I’m not racist or anything like that, I’m not trying to stir anything up like that. I consider it to be a ‘warrior logo.’ Just cause it has ‘Blue Lives Matter’ on the hood, all lives matter. That decal represents that we will take any means necessary to keep our community safe.”
Well… they’re not wrong about the murderer part. There’s a reason we never see much of Castle in the kid-friendly Marvel works out there and to keep true to what he actually represents.
However, The Punisher has been a symbol for many over the years, a man who takes action against the evil, the determination, the self-sacrifice of humanity he makes to make the world a slightly less crime-infested place. Soldiers of the military have been known to use the skull as a symbol of their efforts of fighting and their brotherhoods, but police officers whom serve and protect under the law, something Castle is not that big a fan of for its inadequacy? Might be calling a good point there.
