The first installment of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy delivered maximum enjoyment on minimal expectation. Most of us weren’t terribly familiar with the characters, their backstories, or how they would manage to fit in with the rest of the Marvel universe. We just knew that A) it looked like a fun ride, and B) Marvel hadn’t disappointed us yet.
Fast forward three years, and the story for Vol. 2 is very different. We all know and love Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket. We can’t wait to see what will happen next in their story. In short, there’s tons of expectations for the sequel, making it one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Will it live up to the hype? Is that even possible?
According to a test screening audience, the answer is a resounding yes. It scored an unheard-of 100% from those lucky enough to attend. (To put that number in perspective, even Iron Man and The Avengers only scored in the mid-90’s.) Guardians is now the 15th installment in the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it appears to be going stronger than ever.
Per the report:
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has tested higher than any Marvel Studios movie in the company’s nine-year history. The movie’s score: a perfect 100.
Insiders confirm that extremely rare if not unprecedented score, saying the movie, which Disney is set to release May 5, bested the previous top Marvel scorers, Iron Man 3 and Avengers, both of which tested in the high 90s out of 100.”
While test screenings aren’t always a surefire indicator of quality (modern classic Pretty Woman scored a 70, Oscar winner Black Swan just a 55), when you put it together with Marvel’s proven track record, it looks like we have a sequel on our hands worthy of Awesome Mix Vol. 2. We’ll find out for sure on May 5th, when Guardians finally hits theaters nationwide.
