With the production of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and its still untitled sequel now well underway, it is inevitable that more news related to the two projects would be revealed in good time.
And especially given that these two films are intended to wrap up the MCU as we know it and bring the current story arc to a close, any news related to the projects should not be taken lightly.
It is perhaps, therefore surprisingly that one of the biggest details of ‘Infinity War’ was recently revealed by Kevin Feige himself. And that is the fact that that the film’s antagonist, Thanos is also the film’s main character:
“Thanos in Infinity War is – in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War.”
On the surface, this seems like a very strange decision. After all, why take focus away from the plethora of heroes we know and love?
But when you think about it. It’s actually genius.
What’s the biggest criticism of MCU films? Poorly written and underdeveloped villains.
What’s the best way to cure that?
By making the villain the main character, allowing the writers to spend more time and focus on Thanos.
All the heroes are already well established in the universe, and the dynamic of working together has already been shown to succeed.
And given that ‘Infinity War’ allegedly has over 60 heroes taking part, giving the focal point to the single villain, is actually a stroke of genius.
Put it simply, this idea has so much potential. It’s just up to the team at Marvel Studios to pull it off.
