Despite being known for it’s Cinematic Universe, Marvel is also creating quite an impressive lineup of shows on the small screen. This is set to increase in the next couple of years with shows centring around Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher and The Inhumans confirmed to be on their way. Next year will also see the teen heroes, Cloak & Dagger join the MCU in their self-titled series and now, thanks to an official press release, we know just who will be taking on the roles. Read on to find out more.
Earlier tonight, Marvel announced that Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt have been cast as Ty Johnson and Tandy Bowen, better known as Cloak & Dagger, respectively. Joseph is best known for HBO’s The Night Of whilst Holt is known as being one of the main cast in Kickin’ It on Disney XD. Speaking of the cast, Showrunner Joe Pokaski revealed:
“When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page. We’re so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe.”
As well as the announcement, Marvel also released some character descriptions for the teen heroes. You can check it out below:
‘Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.
Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.’
Given that the show is intended to be geared more towards the young adult audience, this cast and descriptions of the characters make a lot on sense. It will be interesting to see whether they incorporate the same origin the characters had in the comics. In the comics, the characters initially received their powers through an unknown drug, although this was later retconned into merely unlocking their Mutant Powers. Given that the rights to the term, Mutant, is currently being held by Fox Studios, they may require a new origin.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is set to begin filming next month for a 2018 release on the Freeform Network.
