When Mad Max: Fury Road hit theaters back in 2015, nobody could have predicted it becoming the hit it was, becoming a box office hit, a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and even scooping 6 Academy Awards. So, it’s surprising that word on a sequel has yet to be found.
Now – thanks to an interview with Tom Hardy, who plays the titular hero in the film, we now know that two films are currently on their way. Read on to find out more.
In an interview with The Wrap, Hardy was asked whether a sequel was still on the cards.
Per Hardy:
“Yeah I believe so! I don’t know when that starts, but I believe that’s in the books. There’s a couple of those floating around. I’m waiting for the call to come.”
The sequels have been rumored for a while with director George Miller revealing that he has ‘two more stories‘ in mind after he has finished work on his next film, which isn’t set to be part of the post apocalyptic series. One of the film’s currently has a rumored title, Mad Max: The Wasteland and would star both Hardy and Charlize Theron, who played one-armed bad-ass Imperator Furiosa in Fury Road.
Miller has also expressed interest in directing a film which would delve into Furiosa’s backstory, with Tom Hardy only appearing in a cameo role as Max Rockatansky. Given the popularity and mysterious nature of the character, this would definitely be an interesting film to see.
As it stands, Warner Brothers have yet to announce any new films in the franchise, but given the success of the last film it would be foolish of them not to.
