The long-awaited Pacific Rim sequel is finally coming in 2018. Now titled Pacific Rim: Uprising, it’ll be directed by Steven DeKnight who was the showrunner on season 1 of Daredevil. Meanwhile, the lead role belongs to John Boyega, who plays the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film.
Many of the other cast members appearing in the film are also newcomers, however there has been news of sorts that Rinko Kikuchi could be returning from the previous installment. It’s long been speculated that she would show up somewhere in the Pacific Rim franchise as Mako Mori. A new photo suggests that this is definitely the case – but also seemingly confirmed a surprise actor making an appearance in the film.
A photograph taken by Pacific Rim: Uprising’s cinematographer, Daniel Mindel, shows Kikuchi’s name on a cast list in the photo. And, even more interesting, is that Dredd and Star Trek actor Karl Urban’s name appears.

While the campaign for a Dredd sequel has dimmed down a bit (fans still want it, we all do) the actor was cast in Thor: Ragnarok in a prominent role and now, according to this set photo, it seems as though he will be in Pacific Rim 2 as well!
Here’s hoping all of these big roles somehow lead to a Dredd sequel down the road.
Pacific Rim 2 hits theaters February 23rd, 2018.
