With a 7 year hiatus that was totally worth it, Deadpool’s simple “love story” (Wham) and marketing campaign went beyond the realm of comic fans and moviegoers alike, demolishing the box office and even nominated for some very notable nominations for the Oscars of 2017.
While set-backs with Tim Miller and Junkie XL leaving production for a sequel, Fox and actor Ryan Reynolds wasted no time at this once discarded film idea and have successfully found John Wick director David Leitch to be the man for the job. Deadpool 2 is a certainty (with Fox planning a trilogy already, it’s no doubt) but when in 2018 it plans to break the fourth wall again is still up to anybody’s guess.
Of course, none of this would have came to be without Reynolds and his passion for the film and character. Heavily involved with the writing (have you seen his twitter feed? He was always the Mouth), his opinions on Deadpool are likely the first to always be listened. On this topic from Variety, Reynolds goes into the romantics, specifically the opposite of his current love Vanessa’s gender.
“I think that could be played up more. He’s an outsider in every way, shape, and form . . . The only thing that you have to consider going forward is, ‘Are we being faithful to the canon that we nurtured and created?”
Reynolds always made it clear he interprets the Merc with a Mouth as pansexual, which also what Deadpool’s director Tim Miller also stood, and Ryan made it fearlessly known ratings and discrimination are not a concern for him, especially in international releases:
“That’s not really a problem for us, because we were banned in China. We were rated ‘f— you!’ in China.”
The rest of Team Deadpool are also supportive of the idea. Screenplay writer Rhett Reese also spoke his thoughts for the future:
“I hope [Deadpool’s sexuality] can evolve into something a bit more.”
Of course, Wade Wilson’s journey and heartfelt reunion with Vanessa would be quite the obstacle for both tone and fans alike. It would have to be executed well for it to work the way the writers want.
Gal Gadot and DC Comics confirming Wonder Woman’s bisexuality, Harley and Ivy likely being a pairing in the future Gotham City Sirens film, it’s no surprise there is quite some progressive evolution with classic icons. That’s also a halfway agreement to Reynolds accepting a Deadpool and Spidey ship as a fan-pleaser.
