Although most audiences might not have been familiar with the Suicide Squad until the film adaptation was announced, they have been a part of DC Comics since as early as 1959.
With such a lengthy history, it’s not at all shocking that a video game would someday be put into production. Unfortunately the game, which became Suicide Squad: Special Ops, was rather badly made and only allowed players to utilize up to three characters.
That’s why, when it was rumored we would be getting a much more fleshed-out game, fans became incredibly excited. However, according to Kotaku, the game was cancelled after a mere two years of development:
Executives at Warner Bros. decided to axe the Suicide Squad game earlier this month following a long period of turbulence at WB Montreal, according to three people familiar with the studio. The game, which would star DC Comics’ eponymous band of anti-heroes, had been in development for at least two years. Hints of its existence had been floating around for just as long. I’ve heard it was a co-op game—and that it failed to impress Warner Bros. management during greenlight meetings—but not much else.
I guess that’s the unfortunate part of learning about games before they’re officially announced. There’s no telling what will end up happening to them.
As a result of its cancellation, the developers will instead be focusing on a new Batman game featuring Bruce Wayne’s son Damian.
Next year we will also be getting Injustice 2, so if the new Damian game goes bad, we’ll at least have that to look forward to.
What do you think, would you rather see the unfinished Suicide Squad game, or are you happy to get more Batman? Sound off in the comments below!
