The numbers are in! Well, the estimates are at least.
Star Wars is one of the biggest cinematic franchises in history, notorious for smashing the box office and ruling theatres and this year’s Rogue One has not disappointed.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens blew up the box office last year with its record setting $248 million, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story lived up to, even exceeded, expectations with a $155 million debut, according to comScore.
This brands Rogue One as the third biggest opening this year, after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million), Captain America: Civil War taking top spot with $179.1 million. If that’s not merit enough, Rogue One takes second-best December opening in history and the 12th-largest of all time.
ComScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian says “If not for The Force Awakens, our minds would be absolutely blown by a $155 million opening in December.”
He continues to say that before The Force Awakens hit theaters, no December film had ever made more than $100 million. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) was the reigning Christmas-time champion with $84.6 million.
Rogue One is in theaters now.
