Green Lantern is a movie that I’ll never forget. I remember sitting at the cinema with a good friend of mine and being absolutely amazed by how shocking the whole thing was. By the time the credits rolled, I walked out of the theater completely depressed. Now let’s get one thing clear. I’m not the biggest comic book fan and I knew very little about the Green Lantern mythology – however, I came in with an open mind and was blown away for all the wrong reasons. It was the first time I had walked out of a movie and not wanting to watch a film again.
There was a lot wrong with Green Lantern and many critics were quick to point out its flaws. Having just crawled back its budget, the film was quickly forgotten about and put a brief stop to Warner Brothers plans for a DC cinematic universe.
One of the main issues, apart from the dreadful CGI, was that the film couldn’t decide what it wanted to be.
Well now, Ryan Reynolds has recently shared his thoughts with Entertainment Weekly on what he believed went wrong with the movie:
“Well it’s simple: Deadpool always knew what it was. With Green Lantern, I don’t think anyone ever figured out exactly what it was. That isn’t to say the hundreds of men and women didn’t work their fingers to the bone to make it as good as poosible. It also fell victim to the process in Hollwyood which is like poster first, release date second, script last. At the time, it was a huge opportunity for me so I was excited to try and take part in it. I did however write a letter to Fox right before I had to decide whether or not I was gonna do Green Lantern. I asked one last time sort of like the groom standing at the altar, ‘Will you please be my wife?’ and they said they couldn’t pull the trigger on Deadpool. For too many reasons too boring to illustrate, it just didn’t work.”
Overall it seems that things have turned out pretty well for Ryan Reynolds in the end after the disaster that was Green Lantern. The reasons alone are enough to excuse Reynolds of any wrongdoing and one can only hope that Warner Brothers gets it right second time round. With rumors circulating that the character will be appearing in the Justice League with Arnie Hammer in the role, it seems as if we’ll find out sooner rather than later.
