Universal has finally done it. In their desperation to compete with Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and the consistently growing DC film franchise, they’ve began to launch their own universe. But this one isn’t of heroes – rather, they’re utilizing their catalog of monsters from the 1930s to 1950s. Unfortunately I don’t think they remember how those monsters worked.
With that said, they’ve just released their new trailer for The Mummy, set to star Tom Cruise in the leading role and Sofia Boutella as the titular Mummy.
But take a close look, and try to consider, what exactly does this trailer show that makes you think of the “Universal Monsters”? It looks like it could’ve been from any other studio, and any other genre for that matter.
For example, the Mummy isn’t very menacing – she seems to be comprised of cliches from various other movies and shows to come out recently.
We have the dividing irises that was an effect already showcased in the trailer for the Exorcist series. And then we get to see the Mummy herself, which looks more like Enchantress from Suicide Squad. Such a shame.
The movie seems to be creatively bankrupt, and completely oblivious to what made the Universal horror films so great. But at least we can see Tom Cruise get tossed around a CGI plane and various other bland digital effects with the same scope as Transformers.

The Mummy hits theaters June 9, 2017.
