Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is among the sterling line up of films in the MCU to come next year. If that alone doesn’t merit enough of a hype, Marvel have just made an exciting announcement for gamers who have long been pining for Marvel to release some quality games.
Today, LIVE on stage at The Games Awards, Marvel revealed their ‘previously top-secret project’, an interactive episodic game series based on Guardians of the Galaxy. Titled Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, the first episode in this five-part adventure will premiere in 2017 digitally, on home consoles, PC and mobile devices.
Telltale and Marvel’s official announcement came earlier today. Telltale Games Co-founder and CEO Kevin Bruner had this to say:
“The energizing blend of humor, emotion, teamwork, and full-on sci-fi action-adventure of the Guardians provides an enormously satisfying space to explore through Telltale’s unique style of interactive storytelling. In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, players will take on multiple roles within the ragtag band of heroes, and take the pilot’s seat in directing their escapades around the universe. We are always honored to be working with the best creative partners and storytellers in entertainment, and working with Marvel on this series leaves us excited to share what we’ve been developing when it premieres in 2017.”
Telltale are notorious for this episodic form of interactive gaming, which sounds quite innovative, and seems as though the telling of this story is an integral part of the experience. The Senior Vice President at Marvel Entertainment, Games and Innovation, Jay Ong confirmed this.
“With story at the core of everything that Marvel creates, who better to team with than master storytellers Telltale Games. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series fully showcases Marvel and Telltale’s rich legacy of storytelling, and fans will find themselves immersed in an original, character-driven narrative. As part of our strategy to establish a new standard for Marvel games, this is certainly among the great titles to come.”
Not only is the game itself great news, but the fact Marvel have announced it is equally so. By that, I mean the fact that we should be getting a sweep of games, of which this one is the first. Jay Ong saying ‘this is certainly among the great titles to come’ is what really gives us the tip. We haven’t really seen many stand-out Marvel games, come to think of it, where DC have games like Injustice: Gods Among Us (successful enough to be getting a sequel very soon) and the award-winning Batman: Arkham Series. Funnily enough, one of the most prominent Marvel games in recent years would be LEGO Marvel’s Avengers, so it’s certainly good to hear that Marvel are bringing us more in the gaming region.
The official announcement on Marvel’s news page of their website gave more details. A ‘special season pass disc’ will be included when the game hits retail. This will include the first episode in the season, as well as grant access to the next four episodes, which will become available through online updates.
Specific details regarding what platforms of the game will come in the next year. In time, we can also expect more updates and trailers, which will reveal what kind of game it will be. Personally, as a lover of Guardians, and desirer of quality Marvel games, this announcement is intriguing, to say the least. Bring on 2017.
