So news from director Josh Boone’s upcoming New Mutants movie has been scarce at best, with mostly rumors, nothing solid. However last night a storyboard animatic was revealed by Comingsoon.net, and they have reports from sources close to the production concerning details and potential castings.
The storyboard animatic reveals that Demon Bear will be the main villain of the movie. For those of you who don’t know, in the comics Demon Bear is a creature created by demonically mutating the parents of New Mutants member Danielle Moonstar, haunted her, and subsequently battled the New Mutants team before they managed to free her parents. It feeds on negative emotion, is able to corrupt souls, and can even teleport. Suffice it to say, the very concept is a huge departure from traditional villains, and should make for an interesting element.
The animatic also confirms that Wolfsbane, Magik, and Cannonball are members of the team. Danielle Moonstar hasn’t been confirmed, however since Demon Bear is closely tied with her in the comics her presence in the movie is a possibility. Check it out below:
The movie is described as “Stephen King meets John Hughes”, separating it from traditional X-Men related films.
It also appears based on the report that Fox is currently aiming for a spring 2018 release for the film, which coincides with a recently revealed release date for a Fox Marvel film on March 2, 2018.
In addition, Natt Wolff, who has previously worked with director Josh Boone before, is being eyed for casting as Cannonball.
