ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story Won’t Feature Opening Crawls

    By Mayoorhan SevverlzNovember 23, 2016

Though there have been rumors for a while now, it’s finally been confirmed by Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, that ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ will not open with the opening crawl that has been a staple of the Star Wars films thus far.

When interviewed by Variety on the matter she stated that:

“We felt [the crawl was] so indicative of what those Saga films are. Initially, we probably will begin the film in a way that is traditional, with just the title.”

The justification for the change boils down to the fact that that the intention is to separate the anthology films from the main ‘episodes’ of the franchise. I’m personally all for this decision, as while I love the space-opera fantasy of the original trilogy and Episode 7, I’ve been hoping that Rogue One is a proper gritty war film, and this seems like a step in that direction.

I would like to see the film have a cold open, with an action sequence showcasing the brutality of the empire. Then cut to the title. It gives the opportunity to show the impact the empire had on normal civilizations in a way that wasn’t shown at all in the original trilogy. It’d be interesting I think.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16th.

What do you guys think about the lack of an opening crawl for Rogue One? How do you guys think the film should open? Be sure to sound off in the comment section below!
