Its no secret that the current Marvel Cinematic Universe will be receiving some changes soon. With the series spanning nearly a decade at this point, several actors are beginning to near the end of their respective contracts, leaving their characters in some doubt.
Recasting isn’t anything new to the Marvel brand, with the role of War Machine changing from Terrance Howard to Don Cheadle, but it has yet to happen to one of the series major characters.
In an interview with Variety, Marvel stuidohead Kevin Feige talked about the possible recasting of key roles:
“Look to history: We have a new Spider-Man right now who was in our “Civil War” film and is in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and the audience has embraced it. And you can look to Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, and Batman as characters that last longer than any one actor playing them. There’s a precedent for it in other franchises that suggests it’s possible. But right now I don’t want to think about it and don’t need to think about it.”
I am glad to hear that the recasting of key roles is not in the foreseeable future, but it is an interesting topic to think about. What the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done so far is unprecedented, connecting several major franchises together on the big screen. How recasting major roles like Iron Man and Captain America would affect the brand is yet to be seen.
While fans may worry about losing stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, Marvel still has so much to look forward to. With Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and the upcoming Black Panther film, Marvel has proven to fans their ability to expand their cinematic universe.
