Naturally with superhero movies being all the rage, many actors want a slice of that comic-book pie. And so one-tactic being employed by a large number of actors to get a role in a comic-book movie, is to just say publicly, that they really want to be a specific character in a comic-book movie, with maybe a ‘pretty-please’ added onto the end for extra neediness.
All joking aside, the latest actor to throw their hat into that ring is Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creative mind behind the Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’. Who is reported to have an interested in portraying the supervillain Carnage for Marvel and Sony in the MCU’s Spider-Man films.
This is an interesting choice, namely because given the direction the MCU appears to be taking Spider-Man, Carnage doesn’t seem like the sort of character that would fit in such a universe.
A recent report broadcast on Meet The Movie Press revealed that the actor really wants to play Carnage, as co-host Simon Thompson explained:
“He said if Disney and Marvel were looking at doing a Maximum Carnage movie or bringing Carnage in as a character, he wants to be Carnage,” Thompson explained. “That’s a goal of his.”
Me personally? I’m against it. Not Miranda playing the character, but the character being introduced into the MCU at all. Namely because he is the embodiment of that weird era of comic-book in the 90s, where sales were declining and writers were running out of ideas. And so the thing to do was make the annoyingly ‘cool’ and ‘edgy’ versions of existing characters, just to superficially appeal to a teenage demographic. Things such as making a ‘cool’ version of Spider-Man by cloning Peter Parker and making said clone ‘The Scarlet Spider’; or killing off Superman and having him return with a black suit and a mullet.
Carnage was and is a character very much created in this vein; someone at Marvel decided that Venom wasn’t cool anymore and so decided to make a cooler version of the character by taking all of his superficial attributes and dialling them up to eleven. Truth be told, there’s nothing that interesting about Carnage that justifies him being brought into the MCU over Venom, or even in a scenario where Venom is already part of the MCU. As well as the fact that both characters being really out of place for the style and tone that Marvel and Sony are aiming for with ‘Homecoming’.
So yeah, while I’m not against Lin-Manuel Miranda wanting to play Carnage, or even him getting the opportunity to play said character. I just don’t think Carnage is worth adapting into film; he is a character that’s very much a product of his time, and it’s a time in comic books that I’m not a fan of.
What do you guys think of this? Should Carnage be brought into the MCU? And should Lin-Manuel Miranda play him? Tell us in the comment section below!
