Casting is currently underway for the solo film of the Captain America: Civil War MVP, Black Panther. So far the film assembled possibly one of the most impressive cast list of any Marvel property with Award Winning actors, Lupita Nyong’o, Forest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan and Martin Freeman all set to join Chadwick Boseman (who is also an Award Winner) as the titular hero.
It looks like they haven’t stopped adding to the talent as Marvel have just announced the addition of yet another Award Winning actress who is likely to have a fairly significant role.
Earlier tonight, Marvel released a statement announcing that Academy Award Winning actres, Angela Bassett has been added to the cast as Ramonda, the surrogate mother of T’Challa and wife of T’Chaka who was last seen in Captain America: CIvil War. Bassett can currently be seen in the FX series, American Horror Story: Roanoke.
In the comics, Ramonda was the Queen of Wakanda after marrying T’Chaka after his first wife, N’Yami died whilst giving birth to T’Challa. Ramonda then became the surrogate mother to T’Challa as well as the birth mother to Shuri, who later donned the Black Panther mantle herself. Despite being his Step-Mother, T’Challa still considered Ramonda to be the Queen Mother.
Not much is currently known about the plot of the film, except that the villains will be Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger and Winston Duke’s M’Baku also known as the villainous Man-Ape. What role Bassett’s character will play in the film remains to be seen.
Black Panther will be directed by Ryan Coogler, and is set for release February 16th, 2018.
