In 1987, comic genius Mel Brooks unleashed his latest creation on an unsuspecting world: Spaceballs. A parody of George Lucas’ Star Wars saga, it featured caricatures of most of the principal players – stuck-up royalty with a secret pair of brass balls Princess Vespa, rogue antihero Lone Starr, neurotic droid Dot Matrix, furry sidekick Barfolemew, big-eared sage Yogurt, and of course, the galaxy’s greatest villain, the black-clad Dark Helmet.
It was a genius sendup of everything great about the beloved franchise, and managed to do so without ever insulting it. Brooks was Hollywood’s king of lampooning for more than 30 years, bringing us Young Frankenstein, The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, History of the World Part 1, Dracula: Dead and Loving it, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. In fact, even though he has been semi-retired since the death of his wife Anne Bancroft in 2005 β and is now 90 years old β fans are clamoring more than ever for a sequel to Spaceballs, which he teased in that film’s credits. (It was to be titled βThe Search For More Money.β)
While we wait to see if that will ever happen (Brooks hasn’t ruled it out), we’ve been given this little gem to tide us over. YouTube mashup genius StryderHD has created a trailer for Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens. All the core characters are represented, but with a more serious tone, similar to the trailer for last year’s Star Wars hit.
Check it out, and tell us what you think!
