Ever since Tim Miller stepped down as the director for Deadpool 2, there has been plenty of speculation on who would take his place. There were many different directors people were hoping to see do so and there was even a petition for Quentin Tarantino to take the helm. While the Kill Bill director won’t be taking the director’s chair for this one, another highly regarded contender was recently confirmed to direct the sequel to the hit superhero comedy. That director is David Leitch.
Back in 2014, Leitch impressed audiences with his neo-noir thriller, John Wick. Along with that, this isn’t Leitch’s first run-in with the X-Men franchise. Ironically enough, he worked with Reynolds playing the role of Wade Wilson in a much more despised interpretation of the merc with a mouth (or without one in this case), X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now before anyone takes that as a bad sign, he only served as the action coordinator in that film, so he wasn’t part of the core reasons why that film was terrible.
While some worried after Tim Miller’s departure from Deadpool 2, many have taken Leitch being the director as a sign of good things to come for the fourth wall breaking mercenary’s next big screen outing.
Ryan Reynolds finally made a statement about Miller’s departure earlier this week, saying the following:
“All I can really add is that I’m sad to see him off the film. Tim’s brilliant and nobody worked harder on Deadpool than he did.”
Deadpool 2 is set to release sometime in 2018 with Ryan Reynolds returning as the titular character. With Fox reportedly already having plans for Deadpool 3 (with X-Force involved), they’re probably looking to get the ball rolling.
We will be seeing David Leitch’s name on another comic book film, The Coldest City, next year.
