Holy sugar-honey-iced-tea… now that is a trailer!
Right from the get-go itĀ feels very unique and creative, from the music to smaller details such as the various studio logos look like they’re being shown through a projector. It presents a tone that you wouldn’t expect from a King Kong trailer, and yet feels right at home, probably best summed up with the nonchalant manner they justify the bombing of the island.
And then things take a turn for the worse, (in a good way) when the beast is revealed! Gone is the catchy pop song, Kong is here to wreak havoc.
Some of you may remember my, ever so slightly negative article related to the so called ‘reveal’ of Kong from Entertainment Weekly. Here, in this trailer, it works perfectly, because they present a sense of scale. They reveal the stakes instantly by showing Kong taking on the helicopters.
Simply put, this doesn’t work.
But this does.
Just in general, the way this trailer has been shot and edited is so well done. And it’s so nice to see such a refreshing and vibrant colour-palette being used in a major blockbuster. All it of works, and the way the shots are framed does a great job at making you feel small.
Granted while the majority of visual effects work on Kong: Skull Island so far does look great, there are some shots that are a bit odd. Such as this one where the layering between actors and CGI becomes fairly noticeable.
And I’m still not entirely convinced on the CGI for the ‘Skullcrawlers’; looks a bit Jurassic World if you take my meaning.
Overall, this is an excellent trailer, that more than makes up for the disappointment of the ‘reveal’ pictures from earlier. And I for one, am definitely excited for Kong: Skull Island.
Kong: Skull Island will be released in the United States on March 10, 2017.
