Following the seemingly new tradition of DCEU films, the Digital HD for Suicide Squad is available with an extended cut. Fans have been anxious to see what was left out and viewers are curious if what was left could have flipped the film around. We’ll be breaking down what you’ll be missing out for those just wondering how much was cut out. Spoilers, of course, but then again, you wouldn’t be looking up here for a movie you haven’t seen wondering this sort of thing now, would you?
Killer Throw-Up
Killer Croc gets some more spotlight with this one, even covering a bit more of some minor comic details as well as some gross-out moment to add to his creature-like characterization. Captain Boomerang asks if Croc is “supposed to be green like that”, to which the logical response was to vomit from the helicopter and motion sickness. Harley makes her quip, end scene. This seems to play homage to his appearance in the Suicide Squad comics, where he also throws up on a rocket ship.
Bike Chase Scene
The scene that was previewed just yesterday by Entertainment Weekly, the expanded version shows more of that. Harley is chasing Joker down with a motorcycle and with her own mimic of the “Hit me” scene from The Dark Knight, she stops Joker on his tracks, revealing her obsession to him. Her insanity leads to shooting a truck driver and then aiming the same gun on the Clown Prince of Crime. It adds a certain vulnerability to the madness and love Harley has, and it’s added with what should be an iconic line of Joker perfectly describing Harley: “You’re more afraid of my heart, than you are of a gun?”
Squad Tactics
Struggle between military and the supervillains were already rocky from the start with Slipknot’s “great escape”, causing Deadshot and Harley to initiate a strategic attack against their controlling supervisors. While the theatrical had a dry cut spread of the plan with others, the extended version shows actual communication with the rest of the group, showing more of Diablo’s pacifism and Killer Croc’s…not very pacifistic approach towards Captain Boomerang. There is a clearer interactions between the Squad, with more versatility of the actors playing off each other.
Squad Talk
One of the biggest concerns with the theatrical cut was while character chemistry was great, there felt a few more holes missing with showing the interaction developing, especially towards the end of the film. Harley is shown to get closer insight on Killer Croc and his cannibalistic ways, and even gets to know the “not a thief” Katana and her backstory. It also has Katana unmasking herself, a vulnerable moment for both her and the anticipation of fans. Deadshot’s interaction with Flagg was also more fleshed out with both wanting to help each other as people than as just direct orders. Flagg sees real leadership material with Floyd and also shows a more compassionate side as he allows a promise of allowing Deadshot to see his daughter more in exchange.
The Bar
One of the most speculated scene cuts were noted from the trailer at the bar, with Harley and Diablo’s amusing interaction regarding offering the fire starter with water. Not only did that scene come to its fruition in the extended cut, but a deeper talk with Diablo’s past was also provided to make his origin story all the more moving.
Extended Prison Break
Following Joker’s break from Arkham and the shock therapy of hurting Dr. Harleen Quinzel “really really bad”, there was a bit more in between what happened. Despite the briefness of the scene counting to less than a minute, it actually is the first of the more in-depth understandings of Harley and Joker’s relationship.
While the theatrical appeared to show a uncaring side to Joker, the scene shows there a more objectification of Harley in Joker’s escape, teasing her as she’s strapped to torture.
Suicide Squad Extended Edition is available now for home viewing on Digital HD, while the Blu Ray comes out December 13th. You can check out the scenes for your viewing pleasure there.
