Video: Behind The Scenes Look At Jared Leto’s Joker Performance In Suicide Squad

    By James HaddenNovember 11, 2016

One of the most disappointing aspects of this summers Suicide Squad, was most definitely the lack of Jared Leto’s Joker. This is something Warner Brothers are looking to correct with an Extended Edition of the film, similar to what they did with Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier in the year.

To get fans excited for the home media release, Warner Brothers has released a featurette focusing on the Clown Prince of Crime himself.

The clip, exclusively released to Collider, focuses on Jared Leto and his transformation into the character, something which was well documented in the media in the lead up to the film’s release. In preparing for the role, Leto was said to stay in character between takes and even go as far as sending his costars gifts consisting of anal beads, used condoms and dead rats. The clips released by the studio doesn’t quite go into these details, but does touch upon the actors method.

Speaking in the clip, Leto said of the role:

“This role has always been interpreted so beautifully, but then there’s the other side: What else can you uncover? What other parts of this story or this life, what can you do that hasn’t been done? That side of me that likes exploration, that likes adventure, that likes to push the envelope, that was set on fire immediately. I knew that I was going to have to dive really deep and go to a place that I’ve never gone before.”

Director David Ayer, who is also present in the clip, also speaks about the actors take on the iconic character, explaining:

“So during the process of figuring out the Joker and helping Jared create that character, I kinda had to say goodbye to Jared. There was a point when he went away and was replaced slowly and surely by the Joker. It was a fascinating process to watch. There was this really nice guy, a good guy with a lot of depth to him, he’s a very thoughtful person … the Joker is not someone you’d say is a really good guy.”

Hopefully the extended release will showcase the character in a way that justifies the amount of preparation that Leto put into the role. We’ll no for sure when it hits Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Download on December 13th.
