Entertainment Weekly have released the brand new exclusive first look at King Kong in next year’s Kong: Skull Island! And here it is!
No I’m being serious, this is genuinely the big reveal that all the news outlets have been going on about. Talk about being underwhelming.
The most apparent issue with this image is the lack of scale or focus. There’s nothing definitive about is aside from the fact that’s it’s an ape, and newsflash for whoever thought that this was the best image to release. Every iteration of King Kong has been an ape.
But the issues don’t even end there, because the particular shot they have chosen for this reveal can literally be of any ape. There’s no indication of size or scale or scope, it’s just a picture of an ape. It’s so generic and bland, anyone could easily think this was from a ‘Planet of the Apes’ film rather than King Kong.
The teaser poster from Comic Con had a much better sense of scale, by showing Kong up against something we can recognize, (in this case a man), and showing us the sheer size of the animal. And given that a film about King Kong (if filmed well), is all about making the monster look as big as possible, there must have been plenty of potential stills from the film in progress that show just how massive it is.
That’s what 2014’s Godzilla film did right, regardless of the final film’s quality, the marketing and reveal of the new Godzilla was perfect. This reveal should have been able to achieve something similar, something impressive, something different. Something to set it apart from its predecessors.
Instead we just got something that’s a bit rubbish, and will probably be forgotten about soon enough. But hey! At least the trailer was still incredible!
