Who’d have thought that we’d live in a world where Deadpool is 20th Century Fox’s biggest superhero name over the X-Men and Wolverine? That’s like living in a world where Batman v. Superman doesn’t break a billion dollars…oh.
Meta-jokes aside; naturally Fox are keen to capitalize on the success of the first film, now standing as the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, with a sequel aiming for a January 12, 2018 release date.
However, the sequel has hit a few notable obstacles, chief of which is the loss of director Tim Miller, resulting in production of the film being slightly delayed. Granted the loss of a director doesn’t necessarily mean that the film is ruined as such, see Ant-Man if you need proof, but releasing news related to third Deadpool does feel a bit like an attempt to distract everyone from the woes of the second.
These are only rumors from a report in THR, but the timing does appear to be a tad bit convenient. The news itself is simple, and states that Fox are already in the early stages of developing a third Deadpool film and intends to involve the X-Force in some way.
Perhaps this could be a way of saying that Fox have managed to get a handle on Deadpool 2, and are confident about moving forward with a third one. Franchise management is a delicate thing, and too much of a focus on upcoming sequels can have disastrous consequences. Who remembers The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4?
That being said, despite the wondrously nonsensical timeline of the X-Men movies, Fox have a much better track record of looking after their franchises that Sony can only dream of. And I seriously doubt that even Deadpool 2’s worst case scenario will be able to sink as far as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did.
And before I even finish writing this article, there are rumors flying about over Fox apparently intending to hitting the reset button on their X-Men movie-verse. (Funny, I thought that was the whole point of Days of Future Past.)
If anything I think that’s a sign that I should wrap up this article pretty quickly. I personally would like more solid foundations for the second Deadpool film before even considering a third one. But that’s not the world we live in.
Film-making for these big studio franchises has become more of a web than a straight line, every decision made for one film can affect 5 others in production.
So no matter what’s happening behind the scenes over at Fox HQ, at least Logan looks amazing!
