Thinking back, most people probably do not remember much about Escape Plan. The 2013 action flick starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger failed to garner much attention from audiences in the states (earned only 25 million).
However, due to the film earning an impressive 137 million worldwide, it looks like we have a sequel on its way. Currently in development from Oasis Films, it appears that Stallone is set to return as Ray Breslin, but will be taking a backseat in a supporting role. Scribe Miles Chapman, who wrote the original film, is returning for the sequel.
For those who haven’t seen Escape Plan, its a fairly high-concept action film. The film follows Breslin, who is famous for his ability to break out of any prison. However, he is kidnapped and trapped in a complex facility, with some shady figures looking to take him out. With the help of Schwarzenegger’s character, the two team up to break out of the prison.
While the film scored fairly tepid reviews from critics (49% on Rotten Tomatoes), I was actually a fan of the movie. It was certainly one of the more inventive projects that the duo had been apart of, and its unique storyline was actually interesting to follow. More importantly, both Schwarzenegger and Stallone had great chemistry together, with their banter making the non-action scenes just as enjoyable as the action bits.
It’s very much up in the air though what this sequel is going to be. With Stallone taking a back seat, I am curious to see who will star in the film. Will they get a more traditional action star like Jason Statham, or get a more youthful actor? Personally, I would like to see Statham get the leading role. He has established a fairly strong rapport with Stallone, and he always has great presence in his roles.
