When it comes to rational opinions, Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus isn’t the first I would go to, especially when it comes to the matter of Superheroes. But now the Wrecking Ball singer has made her thoughts known on an important female hero. Read on to find out more.
Speaking to Variety about the inequality of women in Hollywood, Cyrus explained:
[a] lot of it could be changed if we had a female president. That would give us a subconscious boost. I think people will have to realize they’re looking really dated.”
She then went on to use a poster for the CW show Supergirl as an example of this inequality, going on to say:
For example, there’s a show called “Supergirl.” I think having a show with a gender attached to it is weird,” she said. One, it’s a woman on that f***ing billboard — it’s not a little girl. Two, what if you’re a little boy who wants to be a girl so bad that this makes you feel bad? I think having a title like “Supergirl” doesn’t give the power that people think it does.”
While there have been several characters who have gone by the name ‘Superwoman’, none of them have ever been as popular as the Supergirl character.
Since it’s debut last year, Supergirl has been praised for how it portrays women’s in power and women in general. As it stands’ it’s currently the only live action superhero property with a female lead that girls and women can look up to.
The name itself was addressed in the show’s first season, when Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant said of the name, ‘if you perceive Supergirl as anything less than excellent, isn’t the real problem you?’
Given Cyrus’ recent antics she may not be in an ideal position to speak on behalf of all women. Producer Andrew Kreisberg of the show actually responded:
It’s based on a pre-existing property that’s called Supergirl, so we never had any intention of calling it something other than that,” said Kreisberg. “I think we worked hard, especially in the early part of season 1 to address the discrepancy. We actually had a scene about Kara herself lamenting, ‘Why aren’t I called Superwoman?’ and had Cat with her great rejoinder about how the word ‘girl’ in and of itself is not offensive. We continue to be proud of this show, we continue to be proud of Melissa and the character she represents and the hero that she represents. We stand by the show.”
Supergirl currently airs on CW every Monday.
