Famed Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino is apparently a massive Luke Cage fan. Despite this however, he may not be too keen on getting into the new Netflix show based on the character in the comics.
Khail Anonymous of Yahoo had the chance to hear Tarantino’s statement with the show. Apparently it wasn’t anything with the writing or casting, but rather the timeframe:
I might be one of the pains in their asses because I love the way the character was presented so much in the ’70s,” Tarantino admitted. “I’m not really that open to a rethinking on who he was. I just think that first issue, that origin issue … was so good, and it was really Marvel’s attempt to try to do a blacksploitation movie vibe as one of their superhero comics. And I thought they nailed it. Absolutely nailed it. So, just take that Issue 1 and put it in script form and do that. The Luke Cage: Hero for Hire era … that’s the era.”
In addition, Tarantino noted he was on board for a Luke Cage film at one point.
I had even considered, after Reservoir Dogs, doing a Luke Cage movie. But I ended up doing Pulp Fiction instead. So I think I might have made the right choice.”
Knowing his style and love for the old-style era of film, it’s definitely something that could be seen working.
Going back to the opinion at hand, the present day stage is kind of logical considering the time frame of the other Marvel shows in the same continuity, such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and how marketable their assembly in The Defenders will go. However, a 70s blacksploitation film satire could work in its own independent right. Black Dynamite is a prime example of how awesome it could turn out, but at the end of the day, it’s all up to Marvel on how it needs to be served.
Then again, maybe a pitch to Adi Shankar‘s Bootleg Universe could be worth noting…
You can watch Luke Cage on Netflix available now.
