It was the wee hours of December 18th, 2015. I was in spandex R2-D2 and C-3PO leggings, my neighbor in his normal garb. We knew what was going to happen, but we couldn’t believe it, there was no way, it was impossible…. But then it did. I yelled and started crying, then, in my neighbors shock, he spilled bourbon and coke all down the lady sitting next to us…. The world had lost one of its greatest heroes… Han Solo.
I know to the normal people out there, it really wasn’t that big of a deal. It was the franchise heading in the right direction and reinforcing the fact that Star Wars was back, better than ever and not pulling any punches. But to my neighbor and me, it was soul crushing. This is the man that ran the Kessel Run in twelve parsecs, best friends to the one and only Chewbacca, the husband to a princess and the father to the one and only Kylo Ren… or is he…?
That’s right, there is a theory floating around the interwebs, stating that Kylo Ren is NOT the son of Han and Leia. Now before you grab your pitch forks and torches, there is a Reddit user by the handle of LemmeGhost who makes a pretty solid observation that Kylo might actually be a nephew or relative to the Solo’s. Kylo Ren is definitely very quick to claim that he is the grandson of Darth Vader. He took this very close to his heart, to the point where he turned on Luke to complete Vader’s vision. In this action, Kylo’s greed for power blinds him to the dark side. But LemmyGhost makes a good argument:
If you watch through The Force Awakens, never once is it specifically said that Kylo is Han and Leia’s son. Han will say things such as ‘We miss you’ and Leia will say things such as ‘Bring our son home’. I am fairly sure Kylo will end up being their nephew, [while] the son they speak of is a different character. Every single line is written in a veiled sort of way, so that later when their true son is revealed we can re-watch and see that this was never specifically said.”
I mean, the Solo’s never came out with it blatantly and said, “Kylo is our son,” but it is definitely hinted at heavily throughout the whole movie. Before that earth shattering moment that Han was murdered in cold blood, he refers to Kylo as both Ben and his son. The other kicker is that Kylo refers to Ben in third person, which could mean a number of things. Possibly that Kylo is really a separate entity from this Ben character or that he left the name to become a Sith, like all Sith do… but, oh wait, (plot twist!!) Kylo isn’t technically a Sith, he is in fact a Knight of Ren. BOOM! Mind blown.
So what do you make of this? Is Kylo a whole separate person from Ben or are they one and the same. With Rogue One right around the corner and Adam Driver himself saying the next installment of the Saga is in fact, “quite a bit darker” than the norm, we might actually get into the nitty gritty of what goes on in the dark side and how truly sadistic the dark side can be.
Rogue One is set to release December 16th, 2016. And Star Wars Episode Eight is set for December 15th, 2017.
