Despite being three films in, the DCEU has yet to see the same success that Disney has had with it’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many different people have different reasons as to why they believe this is is the case, but now a popular actor from the Marvel franchise appears to have found the root of the problem. Read on to find out.
Speaking to the Radio Times, Black Panther actor, Chadwick Boseman revealed his thoughts on this years Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. He explained:
I was there the first night to see Batman v Superman, got my popcorn and everything, and I’m not exactly sure what they did wrong, but I feel like sometimes you see a movie – and I could be wrong, or saying this because I’m in the industry – you can see that there’s at times [too] many people deciding something. That there’s not a clear voice from the director.”
It was initially reported that Warner Brothers were much more open to giving their directors creative control than Disney were and while this may have very well been the case with the first entry into the universe, Man of Steel, studio interference appears to be a contributing factor to the lackluster reception of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
Boseman goes on to reveal how he believes it is this interference which sets Disney apart from Warner Brothers, telling the publication:
Sometimes when you watch movies you see that the producers are saying something, someone else is saying something, the directors are saying something. And sometimes, it doesn’t work. I just feel like, what I have experienced at Marvel is that the directors are very much making the movie. So maybe that’s it.”
It certainly sounds as though Marvel have been giving their directors more freedom since the departure of Ike Perlmutter, who was recently revealed to have changed the Iron Man 3 story to make Rebecca Halls role smaller due to potential toy sales. Perhaps after their previous disappointments and the appointing of Geoff Johns, Warner Brothers will give more freedom to its creative teams. It definitely looks like a Wonder Woman is shaping up to be an impressive project.
Boseman can next be seen in Black Panther when it hits theaters July 6th, 2018, whilst Warner Bros. next film, Wonder Woman is set to be released June 2nd, 2017.
