I’ve attended several comic conventions over the years, and the only character I’ve seen cosplayed more than Deadpool is Harley Quinn. Probably half of all dressed out females at a con are, unfortunately, variations on this one same theme. I can’t tell you how many oversized hammers with “your face here” on the end I’ve seen being carried around by slight teenagers who don’t seem to be aware of any other female comic book characters. As a comic fan myself who is also a woman, it’s a little disappointing. There are so many other great female characters to choose from. Not to mention the fact that we aren’t limited to just the lady characters. My next cosplay is going to be Raiden from Mortal Kombat, and I plan to do Judge Dredd after that.
But I digress. There’s nothing wrong, per se, with cosplaying a popular character. But if you decide to do one that there will be fifty copies of in the same room, you need to make it stand out. Make it as accurate as you can, so that people walking by will nudge their friends and say, “Wow, look at that Harley! She did a great job on her costume. Every last detail is perfect!” By the end of the day, you should be beyond tired of every Joker, Batman, and, let’s face it, pretty much every male in the room stopping you for a picture. That’s when you know you’ve done something right.
Which brings us to Laura. The 21 year old Australian beauty has gone above and beyond in the cosplay department. In fact, she’s done such a great job that people are mistaking her for Margot Robbie herself. No minute detail has been left out: the cotton candy pigtails, the smeared makeup, the red and blue satin jacket, the coochie-cutter shorts, the “Daddy’s Lil Monster” t-shirt, the fishnets, the high-heeled sneakers, the baseball bat, and even the identical prison-quality leg tattoos.
