With two Oscar nominations and a slew of other awards under his belt, 39 year old Michael Fassbender has already had quite a career. And with four films released this year, and three more in 2017, he’s showing no signs of slowing down. His roles have been quite varied, having worked in dramas, thrillers, action films, science fiction, biopics, horror, Shakespearean adaptations, and comic book films, just to name a few. So, no matter the genre of the film in question, hearing his name attached isn’t much of a surprise.
What is a bit of a surprise, though, is the fact that he wasn’t happy with a few of the roles in his resume. During an interview with EW at the Toronto International Film Festival, he was asked first about his role as Magneto in the X-Men films.
“I don’t actually like that performance there, to be honest. I just think it’s me shouting. It’s just like…….some dude shouting.”
Well, umm ok. He didn’t elaborate further, so I have no idea just what was the reason he took exception to his characterization of the powerful mutant. Most critics, and fans as well, think he did a fine job portraying Erik Lehnsherr, whose dual nature and ambiguous morals find him often switching from hero to villain and back again in the same film.
Fassbender was next asked which role in his past had been the most difficult for him, he immediately pointed to his Oscar-nominated portrayal of tech genius Steve Jobs, and the complicated script written by Aaron Sorkin.
He wrote all that stuff! It was so dense! It was such a mountain, and I’m a slow learner, so when the script arrived for me and the opportunity came to play the part, I really thought, ‘This is not for me. This should be somebody else. It’s a miscast scenario.’ In rehearsals, I was trying to find a way to get out of the job. I remember telling my driver, ‘If I put my arm in the door, you should slam it. It should cause it to break, and get me out of this gig.’”
That seems like pretty extreme measures, but I guess even the most talented among us still have their insecurities.
A more lighthearted surprise from the interview? He desperately wants to star in a comedy. What sort of film do you think would best suit his talents? And what’s your opinion of his comments about the X-Men films? Let us know!
