Joe and Anthony Russo have explained that the ending for Captain America: Civil War is actually a symbol of something much bigger than most fans expected: Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America.
I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” said Joe. “It’s him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”
Although writer Christopher Markus explained Rogers’ leave might just be temporary.
“There’s a big purple guy coming. He could be very helpful,” said the film’s co-writer.
The “big purple guy” is actually Thanos, a character who will be making the Avengers’ lives a nightmare come Avengers: Infinity War. And it only makes sense that something of such apocalyptic proportions would convince Steve Rogers to come back into battle as the “star spangled man with a plan”, Captain America.
Fans will definitely keep an eye on this, as they don’t want the beloved character to change too much, but knowing Marvel, they know exactly what they’re doing, especially when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
