It seems like we’re getting new information almost daily about Spider-Man: Homecoming. We’ve just learned (maybe?) that Zendaya may be playing Peter Parker’s iconic love interest, Mary Jane Watson, and that villain The Shocker is joining The Vulture and The Tinkerer in antagonizing our young hero. (Let’s hope stuffing three villains into one movie doesn’t have the detrimental effect on this film that it had on the disastrous Spider-Man 3.)
And now, there are hints of another possible Spideyverse character joining the fray. A casting call sheet leaked on the website Reddit lists young actress Tiffany Espensen simply as “Cindy.” But eagle-eyed comic readers jumped straight to the (very logical) conclusion that this character is, in fact, Cindy Moon, also known as the relatively new superheroine, Silk.
Cindy was bitten by the same radioactive spider that Peter was, and gained similar abilities. However, she wasn’t able to keep them under control as well as her classmate. She was hidden from the world by a man named Ezekiel, who trained her to use her newfound arachnid abilities – which include organic fingertip web shooters, photographic memory, and an even stronger spidey-sense than Peter. She is rescued by Spider-Man, returns to New York City, and eventually joins the superhero ranks as Silk.
While this theory is so far unconfirmed, it would certainly fit in with Marvel’s efforts to make their roster of heroes more diverse. Another kick-ass female character can only be a good thing, as long as she is portrayed well on the big screen.
