Captain Marvel isn’t set to hit theaters for another three years, but it already sounds as though we won’t be seeing the characters origin as it was in the comics all because of a certain DC Character with a similar backstory.
The film’s screenwriter, Nicole Perlman, was recently on Any Time with Vin Forte where she discussed the issues with bringing the character to the big screen. She explained:
I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s obviously such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character.”
In the comics, Major Carol Danvers received her powers after an exposure to a explosive device caused her human genes to meld with that of the original Captain Marvel, the Kree warrior known as Mar-Vell. This led to her becoming the hero known as Ms Marvel, until taking on the Captain Marvel name of her own in 2012.
Whilst the Green Lanterns origin also involves a military man receiving his powers from an alien being, it still seems to be different enough that they could get away with it. For starters, Hal Jordan received his powers from a power ring, given to him from dying alien Abin-Sur and resulting in him becoming a member of the intergalactic police force the Green Lantern Corp. This seems more akin to that of the Marvel character Nova, who is also a member of an Intergalactic Police Force, known as the Nova Corp.
With the Kree already making appearance in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, it is still possible that Mar-Vell may show up in the MCU somewhere in the future.
Brie Larson is set to take flight as the titular character when Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8th, 2019 – although it’s entirely possible that she’ll appear in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War
