Marvel went to great lengths at last month’s SDCC to generate as much hype as they could around the upcoming ‘Doctor Strange’ movie, and also next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming’, but one project they didn’t have much to say about was ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. The third installment in the Son of Odin’s solo series is currently halfway through filming, and most of the information that we do know about it has been drawn from the limited casting announcements, and the Twitter feeds of those currently larking about on set.
Marvel producers have revealed that the movie will be drawing heavily from the ‘Planet Hulk’ storyline, and fans have also seen the Hulk’s gladiator Armour on display. We also know that it’s an event that will potentially spell the end of Asgard as the MCU currently knows it, with the dream sequences from ‘Age of Ultron’ underlining the film’s ‘Ragnarok’ title, which comes from the Norse mythology of the end of days/subsequent rebirth of man.
Excitingly, a photo has today emerged from the film’s set showing what would appear to be an Avengers Quinjet being prepped for filming:

Now, bearing in mind that the film will be set predominantly in Asgard, with very little Midgard action taking place (The official explanation for why Natalie Portman hasn’t been cast to appear…), what would a Quinjet be doing on set? Well, aside from the usual magical and mysterious elements that any cinematic trip to Asgard brings with it, there are two explanations that can be found in the existing Marvel source material.
The first answer comes from the ‘Planet Hulk’ series itself. In that storyline, the Illuminati trick Banner onto an orbiting satellite and then fire him through a black hole. Banner was subsequently deposited onto an alien Gladiatorial War-World, where he eventually fought his way to becoming ruler. We last saw mark Ruffalo’s incarnation at the end of ‘Age Of Ultron’ sat brooding in his Quinjet, so it’s entirely possible that the start of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ will see him being somehow sucked through a portal/black hole onto the alien War World to start that element of the storyline.
The second answer comes from the animated DVD ‘Hulk Vs’. In that story, Loki allies with the Enchantress to abduct Banner from Midgard, separates his two personalities and then then tries to use the Hulk to kill Odin, who is incapacitated in the OdinSleep. So, is it possible that this movie will see Loki pluck the Quinjet out of our reality and into Asgard? This would then mean that the rampaging Hulk is the threat that will destroy and lead to the rebirth of Asgard, with Thor trying to defeat his former ally.
Either way, it’s looking like it’s going to be a rough old ride for Thor and the Warriors Three, and that’s without even factoring in Karl Urban’s lethal-looking Executioner.
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled for release on 27th October 2017.
