We live in a world where movies are now being rebooted every few short years, leading up to endless road maps of sequels, prequels, and any other term executives can come up with. This, unsurprisingly, means we’ll be getting a sequel to this year’s Deadpool. And also unsurprisingly, it’ll be parodying the whole concept of the current filmmaking climate.
“I think Deadpool 2 will comment on anything that’s happening in movies today, especially in superhero movies,” producer Simon Kinberg managed to say at this year’s TCAs.
He also said it’ll comment on the sort of glut or saturation of these movies and the proliferation of sequels.
The producer also managed to shine some light on some of the things that Fox is doing with their other Marvel properties.
Kinberg said that the character Cable, who’s been announced to appear in the sequel, still needs to be cast. And, similarly, the delays with Gambit are partially due to their desire to “find a very special and unique tone.” And that they’re “really close right now” to Gambit’s new script.
There’s also the television aspects to X-Men, where Kinberg has stated he’s very excited about the new FX series Legion. The producer also hopes he and showrunner Noah Hawley will be able to tell several years’ worth of stories through that series.
“In Legion, David, the main character, we’re talking a lot about how do we evolve him over multiple episodes, multiple seasons. [We’re] thinking years down the line ideally for his character,” Kinberg said. Showrunner Noah Hawley explained Kinberg pitched the series to him during the Days of Future Past international press tour, where he described it as “Breaking Bad in the superhero world.”
Lots of interesting developments are being made with the X-Men franchise, and it seems that they want to create something that stands out amidst other superhero films and franchises. Deadpool is satirical, Gambit needs to be special, and Legion will focus on character development and the grit of the X-Men universe.
Legion will debut on FX early 2017, while Deadpool 2 is being planned for a January 12, 2018 release.
