Unfortunately for Warner Bros., it seems as if critics haven’t taken too kindly to the DC Cinematic Universe thus far. Fans, however, have been much more split down the middle. Some love the darker direction and tone whilst others are completely against it. Well now the cast of Suicide Squad have responded to the negative backlash and if one things for sure, they’re not going down without a fight. Will Smith recently told Reuters:
“I think people had expectations that may have been different, but I’m excited for the fans to get to vote.”
A fair comment which touches upon one of the main reasons as to why people are sometimes disappointed. A movie at the end of the day should be judged by its own merits and not by peoples own preconceptions.
However co-star Cara Delevingne was far more upset as she said the following:
“The critics have been absolutely horrific, they’re really, really horrible. You know, I just don’t think they like superhero movies.”
She’s certainly not wrong. The critics have sure been horrible although they’ve been a lot kinder to Marvel’s winning formula thus far, which has pretty much dominated Hollywood for the past decade. On the other hand, other comic book properties have also fallen victim to a good panning by critics, with Kick Ass 2, Fantastic Four and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, to name a few.
David Ayer has also chipped in with his thoughts and he certainly wasn’t pulling any punches:
I made the movie for real people who live in the real world. I made the movie for people who actually love movies and go and see movies.”
Despite what you may think, it’s certainly refreshing to see a director who is passionate about his job and proud of what he’s made (even if Warner Bros. had a large input in the direction). Whether or not Suicide Squad will connect with audiences however is a totally different matter.
