With the current age of connected film franchises currently in full swing, many fans are seeing this as the end of creativity when it comes to superhero movies, with a lot of film’s now being made by ‘committee’. The idea of studio interference is often thrown around when a film has a less-than-stellar response, much like Fan4stic last year. The latest film to fall prey to this trap appears to Suicide Squad, which has been taking a bit of a pasting on the review front.
Many of the reviews for the David Ayer directed flick have commented on how the film doesn’t seem to flow in a cohesive way, a similar complaint which Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice received earlier in the year. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting from multiple sources that film did suffer from a great deal of studio interference with multiple editors brought on to the production to create a ‘lighter, studio-favored version’ to be shown to test audiences alongside Ayer’s ‘More Somber Version’.
The sources do claim that Ayer was behind this idea and that after the lighter version won out, Warner Bros. invested millions in the additional photography to find the right tone for the film.
Apparently, it was the issue of finding the correct tone, which caused the majority of issues in the production including leaving Ayer under a great deal of pressure during the re-shoot and post production process. The reports claim that the film’s credited editor John Gilroy (Nightcrawler) had actually left before the end of production and it was The Green Hornet’s Michael Tronick which finished the process.
Given that it was during the film’s post-production, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice was released to a lukewarm reception, it would make sense that Warner Brothers would have gone into ‘Panic Mode’ with the next film in their franchise. It’s definitely not uncommon for this to be the case, but at the same time – it’s hard to know for sure.
Suicide Squad will hit theaters August 5th.
