Since the character was first revealed back in the film’s initial trailer, the origins of Daisy Ridley’s Rey have been a complete mystery for Star Wars fans. Her first appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens offered up no clues to her origin, and fan speculation has ranged everywhere from the grandaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi to the reincarnated spirit of Anakin Skywalker. Well, now another theory has emerged, linking the character to yet another to the franchise’s past.
The latest theory comes courtesy of YouTube personality, VincentVendetta, who in a video uploaded to his channel explains his theory that Rey is in fact the grandaughter of Emporer Palpatine. While this may seem like a pretty far out theory, Vendetta has supplied some evidence to support his claim.
The first of these claims is that the two characters both share a similar fighting style, which you can check out in the side-by-side comparison featured in the video. The second point again concerns the final fight between Rey and Kylo Ren. After striking down Ren, the script alludes to the fact that Rey is attempting to stop herself from giving in to the The Dark Side with the line:
“And she could kill him — right now, with ONE VICIOUS STRIKE! But she stops. Realizing she stands on a greater edge than even the cliff — the edge of the dark side.”
Apparently this descent into darkness is also present in the Official Novelisation to the film, with reference to a voice in her head. The actual quote from the book is:
“Kill him, a voice inside her head said. It was amorphous, unidentifiable, raw. Pure vengeful emotion. So easy, she told herself. So quick.”
While this certainly didn’t come across on screen, the fact that it is in the script and novelization certainly seems to imply that it is being considered by the filmmakers.
He follows up by speculating that the reason Rey was left on Jakku was due to Luke attempting to keep her hidden from Supreme Leader Snoke. He also believes that she was present with Ben Solo at Luke’s Jedi Temple, which explains how he seemingly knows the character in the books and film.

While these theories are all purely speculative we will hopefully find out more of Rey’s origin, when Star Wars Episode VIII hits theaters December 15th, 2017.
