It sounds like we can add The Rocketeer to the list of ‘Films which take far too long to get a sequel’ as it has today been announced that a sequel to the 1991 Joe Johnston film is in the works. Read on to find out more.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it was a recent Anniversary screening of the film at the El Capitan Theatre which prompted Disney to consider bringing the character back to the big screen. The new film will be titled The Rocketeers and will be set six years after the plot of the original and will see a young black female take the mantle – after the original Rocketeer, Cliff Secord disappears whilst battling the Nazis. If that sounds strangely familiar to you at all, just replace the words Rocketeer for Iron Man, Cliff Secord with Tony Stark and Nazis with Hydra or something. This new Rocketeer will then undertake a mission to stop a corrupt scientist from using the Rocketeer technology to turn the tables of the Cold War.
The film is in the early stages of development and is set to be written by Max Winkler and Matt Spicer with The Jungle Book Co-Producer Brigham Taylor is taking the producer role. Producers will also include Blake Griffin of the L.A. Clippers and Ryan Kalil of the Carolina Panthers. No Director or release has been announced as of yet.
