If you have had more than three lines of dialogue in Marvel Film, you were probably included in this years Captain America: Civil War. But a recent interview from the film’s co-writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely has revealed one character who didn’t make the cut.
Whilst appearing on stage at the Horton Grand Theatre, the pair revealed various details about their input in the Marvel Cinematic Universe including the news that Scott Lang was originally going to be bringing one of his Ant-Man co-stars to the superhero brawl. Who was it? None other than original hero Hank Pym, portrayed in the film by veteran actor, Michael Douglas.
Whilst on stage the duo explained:
McFeely: At one point [in the airport battle], Michael Douglas came in and had a bunch of ants. In a draft! Put yourself in our position. It’s so early — and it’s the same problem now [with Infinity War] — it’s so early in the process when we are writing. So we’re writing for scripts that are changing. We’re writing characters who haven’t appeared in their own movie yet, let alone filmed their own movie. Those scripts are changing all the time. And our missive [for Civil War] was, ‘Civil War: let’s put, reasonably, as many people into that as we can.’ And so we went, ‘OK, who’s available?’ So you start with a big list.
Markus: And we hadn’t seen Ant-Man yet.
McFeely: We have no idea how big his part is going to be. I heard he hates the Starks. Maybe we can do something with that? You start with everything, and whittle down to what’s reasonable.
It certainly makes sense that he didn’t appear in the fight, given his avoidance of taking on the role in Ant-Man. Had Evangeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne suited up in the first film, I could have definitely seen her character taking a role in the film, possibly against her ally Scott as part of Team Stark.
Hopefully, we’ll see Douglas interact with the wider marvel universe in Avengers: Infinty War which the screenwriting duo are also scheduled to write. At the very least, it may happen in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp.
What do you think? Would you have liked to have seen Pym pick a side? Given his dislike of all-things Stark, would he have been a Team Cap guy? Let us know below!
