When I first heard that The Tick was coming back, I was excited. As a ’90’s kid, I enjoyed the Fox Kids cartoon. Back in 2001, when he came to live-action, I made sure I didn’t miss a single episode. Patrick Warburton was the perfect Tick. So, when Warburton expressed that he wanted to revive the blue-spandex-sporting oblivious hero, I was on board.
But then, it was announced that Warburton would not play him, even though the Family Guy/Rules of Engagement actor would still be on to produce, I was a little discouraged. Peter Serafinowicz from Guardians of the Galaxy, who called the team “a bunch of a-holes,” will be replacing Warburton in the blue spandex.
Though I’m not as excited, I’m still looking forward to what this show will have to offer. Hopefully, they’ll bring back some of those crazy villains that were absent from the last show. Those crazy villains from the cartoon, like Chairface Chippendale and Brainchild. Jackie Earle Haley (the second Freddy Krueger, and Rorchach from The Watchmen) will be playing The Terror, a senior citizen baddie who was in the Warburton show, played by Armin Shimerman (Quark from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine).
New photos have been released of Serafinowicz in that blue-spandex.
Here’s Warburton’s and the animated versions for reference.
While Warburton had the size, Serafinowicz’s mask covers his eyes, albiet missing the white-outs.
Keep in mind, though, that this is only just a pilot for Amazon Prime, so far. Once the pilot is uploaded on August 19th, amongst several others in the running, subscribers will vote on who will get a series. So, lets cross our fingers that The Tick will get picked. Especially since he’ll have to go up against Kevin Bacon in I Love Dick and Jean-Claude Van Damme in Jean-Claude Van Johnson.
The official synopsis from Amazon says, “In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an underdog accountant with zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero. The Tick stars Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), Griffin Newman (Vinyl), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Valorie Curry (House of Lies), Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin) and Brendan Hines (Scorpion). The Tick is executive produced by Ben Edlund (Supernatural), Barry Josephson (Bones) and Barry Sonnenfeld (A Series of Unfortunate Events), directed by Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight), and written by Edlund. The Tick is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television.”
