The “Eighth Wonder of the World” is heading back to the big screen in next year’s Kong: Skull Island reboot from Legendary Pictures. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts recently gave hints at the size of the new Kong at a panel at “CineEurope” in Barcelona, “This is going to be the biggest Kong there’s ever been,” promised Vogt-Roberts. “Not 10 foot or 30 foot, but a 100-foot ape.”; and if the size of the skull from the first official image is any indication of that, he definitely is going to deliver.
Vogt-Roberts is explicit in telling us that the film, which is set in the 1970’s, is not a retelling of the beauty and the beast trope used by the other Kong films:
“We’re very explicitly not telling the beauty and the beast story,”… “The original is a classic, the ’70s version is great for what it is, and Peter’s version is a great retelling of the 1933 film.”
Vogt-Roberts explains more about the size of Kong in his film, via Entertainment Weekly:
“From the size of the skull, you can tell that things on this island are much bigger than audiences are used to with traditional Kong lore,”… “Our Kong is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen, and that translates to a lot of different things on the island. In terms of actual size, our Kong is by far the biggest Kong,”… “Peter Jackson’s Kong was around 25 feet. The ‘33 Kong ranged between 25 feet and 50 feet, I want to say he was 50-plus feet when he was on the Empire State Building. He varied in size dramatically! The ’70s Kong was somewhere between them.”
With Legendary’s plan to build a shared universe with Godzilla and Kong, the iconic monster ape needs to be the biggest we’ve seen, considering their new Godzilla is 300ft tall. The planned 2020 film, Godzilla vs. Kong, could quite possibly be the biggest cinematic battle we’ve ever seen. I am anxious to see how Legendary goes about bringing us their new version of Kong. Their 2014 Godzilla reboot received positive reviews, so there’s no reason to doubt that Kong: Skull Island won’t deliver on it’s “massive” promise.
Kong: Skull Island features a loaded star-studded cast (that comic book movie fans will be no stranger to), featuring the likes of Tom Hiddleston, John Goodman, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, and the always screen commanding Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Jordon Vogt-Roberts from a script penned by John Gatins and Max Borenstein, is set for a March 10, 2017 release.
