Simon Kinberg recently sat down with the folks from The Hashtag Show at the Saturn Awards to give a sort of “State of the Franchise” update on Fox’s X-Men cinematic universe. Kinberg provides updates on Wolverine, New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and Gambit.
Wolverine is currently shooting, and early in 2017 they’ll start production on the anticipated sequel to the surprise hit of the year, Deadpool. Kinberg will then start on the screenplay for the next X-Men movie shortly after that.
“The first thing up, we’re shooting the Wolverine movie right now and we start shooting Deadpool 2 at the beginning of next year, then I sit down and start writing the next of the mainline X-Men movies.”
The third stand-alone Wolverine film is slated to drop March, 03 2017, and while there’s no official release date yet for Deadpool 2, with that production date we can assume another early in the year release date similar to the first film.
As for the long delayed Gambit film (it was supposed to release October of this year.), Kinberg let us know that the script is finished and a hopeful production start date.
“We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning of spring of next year.”
That seems like a rather optimistic target date as Channing Tatum has several projects lined up, and the director, Doug Liman, has recently signed on for two other projects of his own. Hopefully everyone involved can get the timing worked out soon so we can finally see fan favorite Remy LeBeau in his own movie.
For the New Mutants Kinberg offered this peek behind the curtain.
“I can’t tell you what the roster is, but I can tell you who the director is, which is Josh Boone who directed Fault In Our Stars… We have a really good script and hoping to shoot that real soon, too. It’s very loyal to the comics. I’ll leave it at that.”
Hopefully we will get more information about New Mutants soon. Perhaps at Comic-Con later this month?
We still have no news on how the Fantastic Four franchise is doing over at Fox, maybe with all the hype early next year regarding their movies we will learn something then.
