Old news is that Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle) will be playing Zordon in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot. You may remember that Zordon is that floating head in the tube.
Even older news is that Cranston had worked on the original series, and that the Blue Ranger, Billy Cranston, was named after him.
Gilligan: You were on that? How did that suit fit?
Cranston: [Laughs] Well, I was younger then. One of my jobs as a young actor starting out was voiceover. I also did dubbing. A lot of dubbing and a lot of voiceover. So foreign films would come in and I’d go in. One of the places that did a lot of that was Saban Entertainment. And they would take movies and then cartoons from all over the world and we’d go and do the English dub. And the Power Rangers came in and I did some voices for that. I had already been there for a number of years, just as a freelance guy coming in and coming out. And it paid like $50.00 an hour, which was fantastic. And you’d work two, three hours at least a day. So I had been there for awhile already and then the Power Rangers came in . They actually named one of the Power Rangers after me.
Gilligan: Yeah?!
Cranston: The Blue Power Ranger’s last name is Cranston.
IGN: [Laughs] Wow, that’s pretty funny.
Gilligan: That’s an awesome story!
Cranston: He’s the fey one, that’s the problem.”
After news broke that Cranston would be playing the giant head, Amy Jo Johnson (the original Pink Ranger) tweeted her buddy, David Yost.
Yo @David_Yost how cool is it that @BryanCranston is playing Zordon in #PowerRangersMovie wasn’t your character named after him!?
— Amy Jo Johnson (@_amyjojohnson) June 22, 2016
There were a few responses to her Tweet, but none from the addressee. He must have deleted it. But according to CosmicBookNews, he was still getting over the former Walter White’s chosen words:
“Not cool. I’m not a fan of homophobes https://t.co/QfJ5O60ay0 last page last line. Fey/gay = a problem https://t.co/qVHwILjNVV
— David Yost (@David_Yost) June 22, 2016″
Yost, who is openly homosexual, reportedly left the show because of the grief he received for his sexuality.
Bryan Cranston said that since he was the “fey one,” in which Yost evidently thinks means “gay,” it was a “problem” that he was named after him. But it should go on record that he is a supporter of LGBT rights. Check out this video.
Johnson even tried pointing this out to her cast mate.
Yes. It doesn’t change my opinion. I’m not a fan. https://t.co/5qO5m1mC3h
— David Yost (@David_Yost) June 22, 2016
Evidently, Yost is still not convinced.
