Reboots are everywhere as of late, and it’s particularly been popular to reboot old science-fiction properties for newer audiences given the new technology and advancements to take advantage of. This is why, naturally, Lost in Space has been chosen for a rebooted series on the streaming-service Netflix.
The show will premiere on Netflix with a ten-episode first season, around 50 years after its original incarnation, and it’s exciting to see what types of new styles and production aspects will go into the show’s creative processes.
The show’s story isn’t too different from the original series, in that it will follow the Robinson family as they’re stranded light-years away from home and forced to survive in strange alien worlds while facing their own personal conflicts.
The show’s creative team will be headed by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the screenwriters behind films like The Last Witch Hunter, Dracula: Untold, and Gods of Egypt; as well as the upcoming Power Rangers reboot. Zack Estrin will work on the show as showrunner.
Casting hasn’t been announced, but it’s presumable that some high-profile actors will be attached to this project given the franchise’s status in popular culture.
The last time we got a reboot of the series, was the critically panned 1998 movie, Lost in Space, which the critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes said:
Clumsily directed and missing most of the TV series’ campy charm, Lost in Space sadly lives down to its title.
Hopefully, it’ll be better than that, though, it wouldn’t be that hard to accomplish.
Lost in Space won’t be lost anymore when it hits Netflix in 2018.
